Two were trying to come out on the grass and fell on the hot pavement and couldn't get back up on the curb. They would have roasted. So we gabbed them and put them back by the nest. We tried to leave them be hoping the Mom would come back. They are cotton tails.
We saw there were three. The third one was smart and hid under the scrubs in the shade. That one will be the survivor.... my sister said. we had to keep the dogs away and hoped the cats wouldn't find them.

You could see how small they actually were when Rose picked one up to put back in nest.

Precious little things...

I have a soft spot for bunnies, since my dad liked to keep about 20 of them roaming in our backyard at any given time.

Rose is worried about them. But thinks we could harm
them if we move them. She put branches to cover the nest a bit.Since our Jacks are critter hunters bunnies in the house would be a disater. Did your dad take care of wild bunnies or domesticated ones.?

Re: Rose is worried about them. But thinks we could harm
They were half wild/half domesticated.Rabbits are very adaptable.. if their mother has abandoned them they'd prolly take to you pretty easily. We taught the dog and cats to keep an eye on the rabbits but never attack.. they'd crouch and hunt and everything, but in the end nothing got hurt.

Re: Rose is worried about them. But thinks we could harm
Forgot to add.. one of our bunnies was really wild, since I found him/her/it at the park, very beat up. According to that site, I probably should have left it there. ^^; I brought it home, fed it kitten formula with a dropper, and eventually dumped it in with the rest of the herd.. Bunny lived to be pretty old-- around 10 years, I think, and helped spawn a generation of mutant eared rabbits.July 20 2005, 05:35:58 UTC 6 years ago
Will have to talk to my sister and see.
Don't think I could train our Jacks not to kill. Augie has done in a young rabbit... and knows the scent of them. She has very strong hunting instincts. But I noticed after touching baby rabbits Rose let the dogs smell her hands. They didn't pick up anything.Rose said young bunnies don't have scent so they don't attract varmits to the nest. Mother stays away not to bring scent to the nest.
Jack Russells will cry and dig and tear up anything standing in their way to critters.

Their ears are so short.
I can't believe these guys are on their own. They are pretty skinny.July 20 2005, 05:54:31 UTC 6 years ago
Re: Their ears are so short.
Awww! Well, I'm sure they will fatten up once they start foraging for themselves when they leave the nest!
